How Does The LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write Work?
The LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write console features a full alphabetical keyboard with large lettering, just perfect for use by a young child. The console is designed for simplicity, but these are young children who need the help of the parents to comprehend fully how to use this tool.
The LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write also includes a screen to write (or trace) the letters on, a stylus to write with, a speaker, and a few miscellaneous simple controls. The LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write is solid enough built to withstand the typical child’s treatment of it, and the stylus is of a good size to grip with small hands.
In addition to practicing writing skills, the LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write will also help a child to build knowledge of the alphabet, as well as learning pencil control and acquiring phonics skills.
You can also connect your device to the online LeapFrog Learning Path program, to track how your children are progressing.
What do Customers Say?
You can see that of 474 customer reviews, 355 are at four stars or above, but this still leaves 119 complaints, and that is a lot – so let’s talk about them for a moment.
Overall, there are only two consistently recurring complaint that we could find.
The first is that the console writing on the LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write might be a bit hard to see. Now baby probably won't complain, but you just might. Looking at a picture of the display at amazon, one can understand why customers might be dissatisfied with it. You can judge the visual effects for yourself, by viewing the picture at amazon using this link (http://amzn.to/1faqzZG).
Many also complain that the toy did not teach the child to write letters, and indicate when the child had gone astray. Instead, the console permitted the child to scribble any ol’ thing, but this does not seem to me to be unexpected, for a toy named “LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write“.
I should refrain from being too smug, though. The write-up on site at amazon does rather lead one to believe that the LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write is an interactive toy that will work with the child mano-a mano to teach your child the alphabet. I suppose it might have been written better to avoid this impression, but you now have this review to give you the inside story.
The unit does is a letter/number tracing mode, which is instructional to say the least, but it does have its limitations. Nevertheless, I don’t think that the reviewers really understood the intent of this toy. That’s ok. It is understandable that the manufacturers of this toy understood children better than these reviewers did.
.......
.......
Viewed from kid’s point of view, this toy is more fun than a “teaching” writer would be. A toy for kids of this age MUST offer opportunities to exercise a growing child’s imagination. That is why we start kids out with a colouring book, instead of just handing them “War and Peace”. It seems clear to me that (in this regard), a toy that frees the child is more enjoyable than one that requires a child to negotiate a learning curve.
When the child is ready, the parents can teach the children the letters of the alphabet one at a time, and show the child how to use the tracing mode to practice each letter that they have learned. On short, parents still have to put in quality time with their children. Go figure!
Should You Buy The LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write?
We think that your decision to buy LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write should rest on the clarity of the visual display, as opposed to whether it will help your child to learn the alphabet. Just remember that it can be used to home school your child in the ABC’s, but the parent must conduct the lessons – not the toy.
If, after reviewing the display for this product on site at amazon, you feel it acceptable for a twenty-dollar item, then it will certainly give your child many hours of mental stimulation.
The LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write is especially helpful to children who are not too keen to write. Such a child can use the toy to doodle, and progress into the character studies when the child feels that it is natural to do so. Many parents report in the reviews that their children play with LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write for many hours, with no idea of how much they are learning.
Scout the dog is your child’s guide throughout the toy, accompanying the child, and keeping them connected to the task at hand. Kids love doggies, especially puppies, so this is a natural mascot that ought to serve your child well.
The LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write is extremely affordable. You now know how to assess the product in terms of its true pros and cons – so the choice is yours. There is a similar toy “LeapFrog Text and Learn (http://amzn.to/1c04TkH)” but reviewers complain that children grow easily bored with this one. The LeapFrog Scribble 'N Write doesn’t seem to have that problem at all.
So, there you have it. If you care, we do recommend this toy, despite a few failings here and there. To get the perfect toy for your child, the baby would have to design it. If your baby cannot get around to doing this anytime soon, you might want to go with this in the meantime. :-)
Till next time – shop smart – and prosper.
