How To Buy A Macintosh Laptop

Buying a Macintosh laptop is not the same as buying a regular Windows type computing system.  Not only are these two major computing systems vastly different, but they serve different user audiences, as well.

Knowledgeable people choose Windows type computers for productivity type tasks like building presentations and making spreadsheets.   Macintosh laptops are perfectly capable to perform this work – but windows raided the game early, jumping into the productivity arena, while Macintosh was still a graphic artists dream.  Views are changing slowly, so you had best stick with this convention for the present.

Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a Macintosh Laptop that will affect the quality of your Macintosh laptop, and the enjoyment that you get from working on it.

The Processing Units:  Just like a Windows system, the newest Apple Mac Laptops utilize Intel Core i5 Dual Core CPU Processing.  You really want to be sure that your intended Macintosh laptop uses this CPU, or a better one.  This is what makes all the difference in managing onboard graphics (without a graphics card) and enables your laptop to run faster when performing virtually any task under the sun.

The Macintosh laptop of today can adjust itself to your workload using their Intel Turbo Boost Technology.  You probably do not fully understand the true value of this new technology (though you can google it) – but you CAN be sure that your new laptop is equipped with it.

Graphics support is via Intel HD Graphics 4000 processor, which delivers graphics 60% faster.  This translates into a smoother graphics delivery for your videos, and more fluid operation during FaceTime calls.

External Ports:  One really needs to understand ports before buying any computer, but they really do require a bit of legwork, so let us simplify the matter right here.  Your Macintosh laptop should offer at least a high speed Thunderbolt and two USB3 Ports.

You can get a good Macintosh laptop cheap with only USB2 ports, but you will live to regret it.  At some point, you will want to transfer data at the higher speeds, and you will be stranded.  These ports mentioned above permit transfer of your data at lighting speeds.

HD Facetime:  Apple updated the HD Face Time Webcam for new MacBook.  Be sure that it is included on your system.  The new camera is an HD 720p Face Time Camera, located in a thin bezel just above the display area.  The updated camera resolution is improved three times on the newer version of MacBook.   The updated version will also include Apple’s “Face Time App” so you now can make video calls to other iPhone and iPod users, instead of just video chat.

New Trackpad:  Trackpad new Apple MacBooks have no buttons on the glass, so that there is more room to track and click wherever you want without bumping into obstacles.  The glass surface is big, smooth and refined and permits use of Multi Touch gestures like pinch, swipe, rotate and the new “four-finger” swipe.  It also supports inertial scrolling so that you can effortlessly scroll large photo libraries or documents.

Operating System:  The operating system included with every current Mac is the OS X Mountain Lion, reputed to be the worlds’ most advanced operating system.  There is room to argue this point, of course, but there is no argument that you want this OS on your Macintosh laptop when you order it.  As we mentioned, it probably is – but take care to be sure.

There are too many updated applications, standard with this OS – that you don’t want to lose.  Included with “Mountain Lion” is the Mac App Store, Safari, Mail, Messages, Calendar, Contacts, Reminders, Notes, Time Machine, FaceTime, Photo Booth, Game Center, iTunes, iLife (allows you to do more with all of your photos, movies and music ) and more.

AppleCare Protection Plan:  Apple technology is proprietary, meaning that you could have trouble getting support if you have a problem with it.  Best option is to get insurance, like the AppleCare Protection Plan.  You will probably get a complimentary service with your Macintosh laptop, but it won’t hurt to expand it out to three years from date of purchase.

There is much more that we could include here, but you don’t want me to be droning on about FireWire, Bluetooth, stereo speakers and other mundane items.  Any system worth its salt will contain these features.

The Macintosh laptop that you buy which addresses the capabilities written about in this post will increase the cost of your system – no doubt – but these are necessary to get good performance now – and to enhance performance in the future.  A Macintosh laptop of this quality is not expensive, and you don’t want a new FAST external hard drive system to emerge for use on USB3 – and your system is limited to USB2!

Bear these few important tips in mind, and you won’t be disappointed in your new Macintosh laptop – and you will get more enjoyment from it as well.
