Portable Washing Machine Buying Tips

Tips on How to Buy a Portable Washing Machine

Buying a portable washing machine really is different from buying a regular washing machine. The size of the drum is an obvious consideration, yes – but if you are going to buy a portable washing machine, then of course, you already expect to give up something.
No, the real difference is in how we think about a washing machine purchase, if we are buying a portable washer, versus a full-sized model.  Let us explore some of those differences now.
Our first stop is the reason you want to buy a washing machine – of any size.  Do you need a washer to do your laundry, or do you just need a place to toss clothes that until now, you have been washing out in the sink?
The latter is a good reason to purchase a portable type washing machine.  You might already own a full-sized washing machine, but what if you only want to wash a pair of socks, or a few diapers.  In this context, you want a portable machine to supplement your normal washer.
Of course, many buy a portable washer because they do not have space for a full sized washing machine – and a portable washer sure as heck beats a trip to the laundry mat.   Budget can also be a restricting factor, some preferring to be able to do most routine laundry at home for a few bucks – and then make the expensive trip to the laundry mat once a month to do the heavier laundry.
This is logical, actually.  Surely, it is clear that you will get a higher quality portable washer for $200 than you will get in a full-sized washer.  Full sized washers can certainly be found in this price range, but beware weak motors that burn out quickly, faulty electronics, and a porcelain tub that will crack and leak before you can finish washing your skivvies.  No, if that is all you have to spend, you are better off investing that money in a portable washer.
Still another reason that people choose to invest in a portable washing machine is that they do a lot of travelling about in their RV vehicles. A portable washing machine is absolutely the tool to use in this situation.  Anywhere that you can find a power plug, you can use a portable washer.
Young families often have need of a portable washing machine. Not only are they often starting their lives in tight quarters, but also babies are a natural part of young love, and soiled diapers are a natural part of having babies about.  A portable washer is necessary – even if a full-sized machine is available downstairs in the laundry room – and no waiting!
Add to this that smaller machines save on water, detergent, and electricity, and you have a good case for doing as much of your wash as possible in a portable washer, if you want your tight budget to go as far as possible.
Before buying a new portable washing machine, just to be sure to consider the following:
  1. As we mentioned before, the size of the drum is all-important because, like full-sized machines, portable machines serve different masters.  Some families need a large washer, while for some; a small full-sized washer will be more than adequate.  The trade-off in a full-sized machine is cost.  The trade-off in a portable machine is portability.  A large heavy portable washer that will not move about as easily is hardly portable at all.
  2. Speaking of portability, what kind of portability are you looking for.  Are you planning to keep your portable washer in one place, or do you plan constantly to move it about? If the latter, and you have a fairly large portable, then you may need a model with wheels or casters attached.
  3. What about hook up facilities?  Does your portable washing machine come with hoses and attachments, that fit your taps correctly, or do you just plan to fill the washer from a bucket?  If the latter, you may prefer a lighter machine with no hose attachments at all.
  4. Then there are the washing cycles, drainage, spin and rinse all of which will up the cost of your portable washer - though you can get a portable washer capable of all these things for a surprisingly low-cost.  Just be sure that if you want these things, that they are available on the portable washer model that you select.
Hopefully, after reading this review, you will have an easier time selecting the portable washing machine that is just right for your needs.  Know your needs first – then select a portable washer to fill them.
