Emergency Power Source with Radio - Duracell DPP-600HD Review

Duracell DPP-600HD - Powerpack 600 Jump Starter & Emergency Power Source with Radio

The answer: an emergency power source for your car.  The question: what is it that every car needs to carry – but probably does not?
An emergency power source is a product that it just makes sense to have in your car trunk wherever you might travel – but few people ever get around to getting one.  Many people have perhaps a set of jumper cables, but this is only part of the solution.
emergency power sourceEmergencies are spontaneous devils.  They do not call ahead.  They do not care if you are at your daughter’s wedding – they just happen.  Nobody is thrilled when emergencies occur, however, if you cannot avoid being stranded in the great outdoors – then an emergency power source might be a welcome addition to the party.
In situations such as these, the Duracell DPP Emergency Power Source comes to the rescue.  More than just a set of jumper cables, the Duracell Emergency Power Source is the Swiss army knife of emergency road tools.
Here is what will be at hand in this one tool, when the unexpected occurs…
  • A charger for charging a phone or laptop computer
  • A power source to power emergency lights, small TV’s and radios
  • A powerful source to jump-start your vehicle
  • A power supply to power/charge your camping equipment
  • AM/FM radio to receive emergency broadcasts
What’s in the Box?
The Duracell DPP 600 Emergency Power Source comes with several handy accessories.
  • Three AC outlets to drive small TV’s, portable washing machines, etc.
  • One DC outlet to supply computer laptops, cell phones etc.
  • 2 x USB outlets for charging iPad, iPhone, digital cameras and cell phones
  • LED flashlight
  • Jumper cables so you can jump-start your vehicle without having to connect to a separate car battery.
  • An AC adapter allows you to recharge the unit from a wall power outlet and stores inside the unit when not being used.
  • A DC charging cable to plug into the cigarette lighter of any automobile, boat, or RV.
  • A handy storage bag
  • An owner’s manual.
  • 1 year limited warranty provided by the manufacturer.
This emergency power pack is 28-amp battery replacement that can jump-start the majority of cars on the road.  There is even a built-in “reverse polarity” detector to stop power transfer, if you should connect the unit to the incorrect battery terminals.  This is a nice safety feature – and a nod for appreciation goes to the Duracell just for caring.
The built-in radio is certainly handy to have available in an emergency.  You will have access to local news and to emergency broadcasts, so that if help is available in the area – you will know where to find it.  There also is a built-in lantern - helpful during the evening hours – and another nod to Duracell for thinking of this.
Customer Feedback
While most customers were happy with this emergency power pack, it scores only 3.7 stars at amazon.  Normally, such a rating would be justified, but we feel that we understand the cause of the complaints in this situation.
The only consistent complaint is the charging, which either fails too early, or the unit will not emergency power sourcecharge at all.  These kinds of complaints indicate bad units in our opinion.  A truly faulty product would not have scored so well – as most people who purchased these units found no problem at all.
Damage probably occurred during shipping in some (maybe all) cases.  This kind of equipment is delicate, and if somebody throws one of these things on somebody’s doorstep – it will be broken.
In at least one case, we found, the charger for the unit was faulty – preventing the unit from charging up.  Where there is one rat – there are two – so we can probably chalk some of the negative complaints up to this, as well.
As an emergency power source, this unit might be a bit overpriced, as there are certainly cheaper similar items at amazon, but you might consider that you get what you pay for – and if you think this unit – at $150 dollars is a piece of crap – just wait till you see how a $50 dollar unit will perform.
You can certainly shop around to get a better price.  The easiest way to do this is to use the “Shopping Center” link below, that will let you search for this item at thousands of stores.  You can then just compare the prices and choose what suits you.
You can read more about this unit – and about emergency power sources in general, by visiting the amazon link posted below this review.  Study the reviews carefully before making your choice.  For our money, this is a great product – and an extremely useful one.
The ball is now in your court.  Choose wisely.
