Although the Olympus SZ11 is relatively small it is certainly big on zoom with a 20x wide-angle zoom that ranges from 25 to 500mm quality.  In fact, this cameras superb zoom features are probably the primary reason cited for most earlier customers having decided to buy the Olympus SZ11.

This is where this Olympus SZ11 falls down – but don’t panic.  There is a sane route to obtaining this camera while avoiding its shortcomings – as we will see in a minute.

First, there is only one review for the Olympus SZ11, so we take the customer mapping for the Olympus SZ10 – essentially the same camera.

For 55 customer reviews, this equates to 4 stars out of five.  That does not sound too bad, but if we were to analyze these numbers, thing would break down something like this:

Thirteen of these customer reviews are below 3 stars.  This puts fully 25% of the total reviews under water.  Worse than this, the complaint for each one of these reviews is the same.  Customers complain, using virtually the same wording, that the pictures taken with the Olympus SZ10 are grainy and somewhat blurry – except when taken in the auto mode.

Now, this is the opinion of the Olympus SZ10, not the Olympus SZ11, so we will have to extrapolate a bit.  After all, the Olympus SZ11 is just too good a deal to pass up, and many complaints of bad pictures is too great a risk to ignore.

What is the solution?  The answer is to buy this same camera – in as new a model as we can find.  That would be the Olympus SZ30.  There are other models, Olympus SZ15, Olympus SZ16 etc. but these will not do.  You would agree with us if you made the comparisons, but we have already done this legwork for you.  Why else do you read these reviews?

The Olympus SZ30 is essentially the same camera at the same price.  The zoom is 24mm instead of 28mm, but are also getting 16 Mega-pixels instead of 14 Mega-pixels, and you cannot have everything.  What you really want to hear – is if this camera produces better quality pictures than the Olympus SZ11.

Well, if the Olympus SZ10, Olympus SZ11, Olympus SZ11, Olympus SZ15 etc. does not take great pictures (same customer complaint) you will be happy to hear that – of the few complaints about the Olympus SZ30, most of them are complaints of a broken camera (it happens) and NONE of them mention bad picture quality at all.

Conclusion:

So, there you have it.  A high confidence path to obtaining a high quality version of the marvelous Olympus SZ11 that you can count on to produce pictures that you will love.  As we cannot recommend the Olympus SZ10 there is no link to the product here – but we are happy to offer a link to the Olympus SZ30.

The built-in radio is certainly handy to have available in an emergency.  You will have access to local news and to emergency broadcasts, so that if help is available in the area – you will know where to find it.  There also is a built-in lantern - helpful during the evening hours – and another nod to Duracell for thinking of this.

Customer Feedback

While most customers were happy with this emergency power pack, it scores only 3.7 stars at amazon.  Normally, such a rating would be justified, but we feel that we understand the cause of the complaints in this situation.

The only consistent complaint is the charging, which either fails too early, or the unit will not charge at all.  These kinds of complaints indicate bad units in our opinion.  A truly faulty product would not have scored so well – as most people who purchased these units found no problem at all.

Damage probably occurred during shipping in some (maybe all) cases.  This kind of equipment is delicate, and if somebody throws one of these things on somebody’s doorstep – it will be broken.

In at least one case, we found, the charger for the unit was faulty – preventing the unit from charging up.  Where there is one rat – there are two – so we can probably chalk some of the negative complaints up to this, as well.

As an emergency power source, this unit might be a bit overpriced, as there are certainly cheaper similar items at amazon, but you might consider that you get what you pay for – and if you think this unit – at $150 dollars is a piece of crap – just wait till you see how a $50 dollar unit will perform.

Unfortunately, a few customers apparently did not anticipate a particular limitation.  We want to tell you about this now.  Customers explain the issue as an inability to set the start times when watering multiple times a day.

To explain this simply, consider this:  When you select a watering cycle of "Twice a day", "Three times a day,” etc...  The Rain Bird SST600I automatically sets the subsequent start times on predefined intervals.

As an example, if you set the watering cycle start time for 5am and select “twice a day” the next watering to occur will happen at 11am (+6 hrs.).  According to the manual these default values cannot be changed.

Moreover, this, subsequent watering time must be on the same day, so that you cannot (for example) set up for 9pm and 3am because three am is the next day.  You can read the customer reviews for a better idea of the limitations here, but clearly, this is not a problem for most customers, who rated the Rain Bird SST600I very highly.

After reading most of the negative reviews, our impression was simply that these users bought a timer that was just not right for their needs.  A timer that simplifies programming will likely sacrifice some of the flexibility that come along with complexity.  Nevertheless, if there is confusion here – we want you to be aware of it.

The Rain Bird SST600I is inexpensive, easy to use, easy to install, and just right for simple watering needs.  You are not going to put your five-acre grounds on this timer – but it is perfect for a greenhouse, small garden, inside garden etc.
