The Importance Of Holiday Traditions
A holiday tradition is a set of activities that families do every year. Most often, a holiday tradition takes the form of a family dinner, with additional activities surrounding it, such as making special candies or building an elaborate snowman.
The holiday tradition often stand apart when an adult looks back on their childhood. They remember this as a time when the whole family had time for each other – and everybody took an interest in what the other family members were doing. Once every year, they have a chance to relive these memories.
Recalling the family holiday tradition brings smiles to the face of adults many years later – even right up through a person’s old age. The harder life becomes, the more we want to remember the good times. Why not start making your own memories with your family right away. It is easiest to create a holiday tradition because these only come once per year, they are very special events, and family members can even invite those who are significant in their lives to attend.
A Powerful Bond…
To be clear, the holiday tradition isnot for everybody. Some people don’t like the bother. In addition, there will be the pressure to uphold the tradition every year. Your children will come to expect it – which speaks to the amazing power of holiday traditions. They provide families a sense of belonging, hearth, and warmth, which becomes their only respite after the world has had an entire year to wear them down.
Family traditions are a powerful bond. Each year you will become older, and keeping up the tradition will become more difficult. Never fear though. If you as the tradition holder have been consistent, then as your children grow up, one of them will either take up your family holiday tradition, or a few of them will show up early to help you with the festivities before the throngs arrive.
Getting Started
Your first step to creating a holiday traditions is to look at the activities or events that your family has enjoyed in the past. Organizing a family fishing trip at the cabin every year is one option. If you don’t have your own cabin, rent one.
If you family loves a beautiful tree, then you’ve got a built-in holiday tradition right there. Properly decorating a tree can take all day – even several days – and will keep an entire family focused on a family activity that they will love to lose themselves in year after year.
Most likely, your holiday traditions will not be elaborate. The key is not to hold a dinner and send everybody home. A real tradition needs to be more memorable. Sure, your company is nice – but people need something to sink themselves into. A domino competition perhaps or maybe working the annual holiday jigsaw puzzle. You can drink eggnog and play Christmas songs, or heck, why not sing the carols yourselves. Your family will forgive your singing voice. That is the magic of the holidays.
The point is that holiday traditions need to be memorable. If we have repeated that too much, we apologize, but we do not want you to miss the point. Families have enjoyed dinners together all of their childhood lives. Getting together is lovely – but is it memorable?
Which idea is more attractive - attending the holiday dinner, or getting everybody together over the holiday puzzle to bring another holiday memory to life? You can even keep them and display them on the wall, like a running family album. You can run an annual contest to reward him or her who correctly connects in the most pieces. That person gets to sign the masterpiece.
If decorating the tree is your thing, assign each child a job all his or her own, so that they MUST attend every year, if the event is to proceed smoothly. The point here is to impress upon the child in adulthood that when the family assembles during holiday tradition, they have a place in the family that will be empty if they are missing. Your child will move heaven and earth to attend.
Family traditions are certainly a fun way to remember the holidays. They build memories and they enhance the sense of family, and if you want to be sure that, your children won’t drift away when life starts making its demands upon them, consider starting a holiday tradition – the sooner, the better. The memories will become a part of your family story, and for your children, they will become part of the story of their lives.
Have fun!
